Georg Dörffel was killed in action near Rome on May 26th, 1944. At that moment he served as Kommodore Schlachtgeschwader 4 with the rank of Major. He was postumously promoted to Oberstleutnant.
He lies buried as an unknown soldier at the German War Cemetery at Pomezia.
