Awarded for his success in air raids against Great Britain. From the late summer of 1940 he flew a number of difficult lone bombing attacks. One of the most successful such missions was on the 21.10.1940, when he and his crew destroyed a large workshop of an aircraft engine factory in Leyland (near Liverpool).
