Biography

Wilhelm Herget was born June 30th, 1910 in Stuttgart, Germany.
He graduated from pilot training before the war and subsequently served with II./Zerstörergeschwader (fighterwing) 76 (ZG 76). At the time he flew the twin-engined Messerschmidt Bf 110.He scored his first victories in the bitter fighting on the Western Front. During the Battle of Britain, he scored 7 victories; at the end of 1940 he had 14 victories to his credit.
In 1941 Herget was transferred to Nachtjagdgeschwader 3 (Nightfighterwing) (NJG 3) and was appointed commander of I.Nachtjagdgeschwader 4. (NJG 4). He remained in command of this unit until December 1944. From Janaury 1945 onwards he was trained to fly the new jet fighter, the Messerschmidt Me 262 for Sonderkommission Kleinrath, an experimental unit. This made him a member of Adolf Galland’s Jagdverband 44 in April 1945. He continued to serve in this unit until the end of the war and destroyed still another enemy aircraft. In the end, Herget was credited with 72 kills, 57 of them by night and 15 by day in 700 operational missions.
Wilhelm Herget passed away March 27th, 1974 in Stuttgart, Germany.
