The following wartime excerpt (dated 30.08.1940) describes why Eichloff received the Knight’s Cross…

“Feldwebel Eichloff is one of the best and toughest pilots in his Geschwader. He has achieved great successes over the course of numerous sorties through his bravery, initiative and daredevilry. He heavily damaged a British cruiser off the west coast of Norway with a large calibre bomb. Shortly afterwards he sunk a York-class cruiser in the same area of operations. He sunk a 4000 GRT steamer in the Moldefjord and set ablaze a transport in the Maas estuary through a direct hit. During operations in Holland he eliminated, among other things, the barracks and military storage facilities near Gravenhage.”
