During the latter stages of Fall Blau the I./Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment 99, under the command of Hauptmann Kopp, was deployed along the Grusinischen Heerstrasse (near Ordshonikidse) while subordinated to the 13. Panzer-Division. At the end of October 1942 the Bataillon, with Kopp among the forward elements, was able to forge a crossing over a tributary of the Terek river. Despite being wounded in close combat in the process, and the bitter enemy resistance on the opposite riverbank, Kopp and his troops were able to create a bridgehead of decisive importance for the further combat of the 13. Panzer-Division. He would be awarded the Knight’s Cross in recognition of this feat of arms.
Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes
