Awarded for distinguishing himself during the siege of Fortress Brest in 1944. When the Americans succeeded in achieving a deep penetration in the northwestern part of the defenses, Major Ewald launched a counterthrust with his Bataillon that pushed the enemy back to their jump-off positions. He would be recognized appropriately for this and other actions during the siege.
