The following wartime excerpt describes why Ewert would be awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“On the 01.11.1941 Hauptmann Ewert and his Bataillon worked their way through a heavily defended and wired enemy defensive position that was 14 km deep. Acting on his own initiative, and totally isolated, Hauptmann Ewert’s efforts led to the capture of Olomno, a location of crucial frontline importance. In the process over 100 prisoners, an AA battery, numerous MGs and much other war materiel was captured. This deed was of decisive importance for the continued attack of the I. Armee-Korps west of the Volkhov.”

“During the fighting in Posen Major Ewert was the soul of the resistance in his sector despite being wounded.”

Major Ewert commanded the western sector during this battle. He was also the one who led the breakout from the city on the 23.02.1945.
