The following wartime excerpt describes why General Felber would receive the Knight’s Cross…

“By the evening of the first day the Korps had broken through on both sides of Rjekta to a depth of 15 km. On the second day the breakthrough got to a depth of 35 km. On the third day the foremost 1. Kavallerie-Division, subordinated to the XIII. Armee-Korps, had already gotten to within just a few kilometres of Gomel. With this the path for most of the Soviet 21st Army (at the time still holding out around Rogatchew - Shlobin) to pull back to Gomel was cut off. The Korps consolidated the wedge that had been plunged deep into enemy territory and in doing so permitted the encirclement of the enemy’s main forces. The XIII. Armee-Korps and its commanding general, General Felber, had a decisive share in the victorious conclusion of the pocket battle.”
