Biography

Daniel A. Joy was a Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class. He was born on 11 October 1918 in Waltham, Massachusetts and enlisted in the Naval Reserve on 8 February 1937. Pharmacist’s Mate Joy was killed in action on 5 October 1942 while engaged in action with Japanese Forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands.
On 28th April a destroyer was commissioned bearing the name U.S.S. Daniel A. Joy (DE-585).

"For extraordinary heroism and conspicuous devotion to duty while serving as a Medical Corpsman with the FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on 5 October 1942. By his courage and efforts in behalf of others at great risk to his own life, Pharmacist's Mate Second Class Joy undoubtedly saved many lives, and his steadfast devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country."
