During the fighting in Hungary in October 1944 the Grenadier-Regiment 88 (from the 15. Infanterie-Division) succeeded in recapturing two strategically important villages in the area south of Ungvar with the help of Hauptmann Dahms and his Sturmgeschützen. In response the Soviets launched fierce attacks of their own to try and retake this territory during the time period 22.-24.10.1944. However this villages were held, again in large part thanks to Hauptmann Dahms and his Brigade, and over the course of these three days the Soviets lost 6 tanks and 55 guns/mortars in their ultimately futile counterattacks in this sector. Hauptmann Dahms would later receive the Knight’s Cross for his actions here.
