At Le Bas de Ranville on 9th June 1944, Sergeant Bond was Platoon Sergeant of a platoon which was in action for the first time. The platoon was subjected to intense mortar and artillery bombardment after which the enemy attacked. In spite of the intensity of the fire Sergeant Bond moved from post to post in the open inspiring his men with confidence and enthusiasm. His example contributed largely to the steadfast manner in which his platoon and neighbouring sub-units faced the enemy attack which was successfully repelled.
