"Sgt Johnson was platoon sgt of the pioneer platoon of the Linc & Welld R continously throughout the operations in Holland. During much of this period, owing to officer casualties, he was himself in command of the paltoon and at all times distinguished himself by his gallantry, enterprise and efficiency. At BERGEN OP ZOOM, in Oct 44, it was necessary to clear many mines, together with road blocks and booby traps. Though most of these obstacles were covered by fire, Sgt Johnson coolly led his men forward and by his complete disregard for his personal safety, inspired them to complete their task successfully. At the crossing of the TWENTE Canal on the night of 3/4 Apr 45 Sgt Johnson was in charge of one of the boat parties. In broad daylight he continually ferried men back and forth while under heavy small arms and mortar fire from the Far bank. But for his gallantry and initiative the course of the battle might have been far different. In rest periods Sgt Johnson, completely of his own volition, occupied himself and his men in clearing Dutch farms of mines and dangerous explosives. He personally took the lead in handling them, and won the gratitude of the stricken local populace on numerous occasions. Though employed in what is often an obscure position, he placed no limits on his objectives, and by his courage and example earned the respect of all ranks of the regiment"
