Under his command his soldiers overcame many obstacles such as blown bridges and other barriers and inflicted heavy losses in men and material on the retreating French army. In a race with the 1st and 2nd Panzer divisions his unit was the first to reach the Swiss border and capture Fort de Joux (near the town of Pontarlier), thus completing the encirclement of French forces at the Maginot line.

Awarded for the successful offensive operations of his regiment during the summer and autumn of 1941 during Operation Barbarossa, in particular during the German advance over the Desna river. His regiment reached the river at noon on 31.08.1941, near Murawij. Two companies in inflatable boats made the crossing and formed a small bridgehead, which was expanded. Two days later his regiment captured Novo Vasilevsky and reached the lower Snobovka stream.
