The following wartime excerpt describes why Saul received the Knight’s Cross…

“Unteroffizier Konrad Saul… received the Knight’s Cross on the 09.04.1913. While serving as a squad leader in a Grenadier-Regiment during the fighting northwest of Orel, he plunged into an enemy attack that was being launched against his Kompanie on a broad front. By doing so he created a wedge into the enemy’s attacking front, and thereby enabled the position to be held through this bold deed.”
