Awarded for his actions during the Third Battle of Monte Cassino in March 1944. His pioneer squad was attached to strongpoint Neuhoff, located in the north part of the city, and their support was invaluable to its successes in the battle. In addition to providing traditional engineer support he and his men proved extremely resourceful in constantly repositioning their defenses, thus convincing the attackers that they were dealing with a much larger force than they actually were. Both he and Neuhoff received the Knight's Cross for their role in this battle.
