Emil Frey served from 5th January 1935 with 1. / (Ersatz) Bataillon 6 at Heilbronn until 9th March. On 9th March he was promoted to Unterführer Anwärter. Following he served with the same unit form 11th June until 9th August and went back to his civilian life as Gefreiter der Reserve. After that he was civilian until het was called for duty with 1. / Infanterie-Ersatz-Bataillon 109 on 15th January 1940. From 2nd June until 10th August 1940 he followed a training at an NCOschool and was promoted to Feldwebel on 11th August. On 11th September he was placed with the 7. / Infanterie-Regiment 109 as occupation force in Belgium. At the end of January 1941 he again followed a short course. Finally he was promoted to Oberfeldwebel. From 13th April 1941 his unit was on the Eastern Front. From 22nd June they were involved in battle as part of the 9.Armee. His service record was closed on 25th February 1942 after he was killled on 1st August 1941. He died of wounds on the head by granade sharpnell. In a letter of one of his men to his parents he discribed how this happened. In this letter was also written that he always lead his troops in the first line. So was written "he died so we could live".
