Biography

Heinrich Niemann finally reached the rank of Oberleutnant der Reserve. After the Second World War he served with the Bundeswehr from 1957 until 31st March 1978 and finally reached the rank of Oberstleutnant.

The following newspaper excerpt (dated 22./23.05.1943) describes why Niemann received the Knight’s Cross…

“Following days of heavy artillery fire, Leutnant Niemann successfully defended a commanding hill south of Lake Ladoga against all enemy attacks. During this time the hill was twice lost to the enemy, but on both occasions Leutnant Niemann and his men recaptured it via bold counterthrusts. During the second attack this 21 year old officer was badly wounded.”
