In Early March 1942 Leutnant Paulus and his subordinate troops were tasked with holding onto the village of Sukowa. On the 19-20.03.1942 Paulus and his subordinates (Unteroffiziere Menk, Nilges and Wilking) succeeded in destroying 4 Soviet tanks on the main village road of Sukowa in close combat. With this an imminent Soviet penetration could subsequently be prevented. For 10 days the Soviets continued to try and achieve a penetration, but were always beaten off by Paulus and his men. In recognition of this action Paulus would receive the Knight’s Cross.
