In Early March 1942 Leutnant Paulus and his subordinate troops were tasked with holding onto the village of Sukowa. On 19-20.03.1942 Paulus and his subordinate Unteroffiziere Menk, Nilges and Wilking succeeded in destroying 4 enemy tanks on the main village road of Sukowa in close combat. By this an imminent enemy break-in could subsequently be prevented. For 10 days the enemy tried to break-in, but were always beaten off by Paulus and his men. In recognition of this action Paulus would receive the Knight’s Cross.
