Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Dienstplichtig korporaal (Enlisted Corporal)
Unit:
Mitrailleurcompagnie, IIIe Bataljon, 8e Regiment Infanterie, Koninklijke Landmacht
Awarded on:
May 29th, 1947
Citation:
"Distinguished himself through courageous conduct against the enemy, by fearlessly participating in the fighting for the outposts on Grebbeberg between May 11 and 13, 1940, under heavy enemy fire, and operating a heavy machine gun single-handedly from an open position, which as the only one offered a sufficient field of fire.

After learning that the machine gun section to which he belonged was ordered to surrender, he refused to comply and instead escaped and engaged friendly fire in order to participate in the further fighting.

After carrying out his order to deliver a message to the commander, and when it became impossible to return due to the heavy enemy fire, he helped defend the command post of one of the battalion commanders down to the last round."
