During the battles in East Prussia (specifically around Mehlsack) in early 1945, Leutnant Rogalski and a handful of Grenadiers fought hard to contain a Soviet penetration. When Rogalski noticed a temporary pause in the hostile assault, he recognized an opportunity to catch them off guard and therefore assembled all available troops for this purpose. Leading them from the front, he launched a counterattack against the Soviets that succeeded in recapturing all the lost ground. For this action he received the Oakleaves to his Knight’s Cross.
