"For heroic achievement in conection with military operations against the enemy at Makin Atoll, Gilbert Islands, 20 November 1943. On the afternoon of 20 November, Lieutenant Gill was hit by an enemy sniper's bullet, which left a deep wound across his back, bleeding profusely. After receiving treatment from the company aid man, he continued in the execution of his duties, paying no heed to his wound. He remained in command of his platoon and kept his men on the offensive in the face of enemy fire until the following morning, when weakened from the loss of blood, ans unable to continue, he was carried to the aid station."
