1. Distinguished himself through the preparation of the landing and negotiations with the Portuguese authorities as commander of the Expedition to Portuguese Timor in December 1941.
2. Distinguished himself in the defence agains the enemy which landed at te Dilly in February 1942.
3. Distinguished himself for standing strong for months under difficult circumstances, and for leading his forces (which were dispersed twice) in guerrilla tactics, making the conquest of Timor difficult for the enemy force.
