On the 27.05.1940 Generalleutnant Schmidt was able to assemble all the armoured forces of his Korps and then, on his own initiative, lead them through Fournes against Lomme (west of Lille). In doing so he played a crucial role in ensuring the encirclement of the French forces SE of Lille. For this he would be awarded the Knight’s Cross.

Along with his Korps, General Schmidt was able to capture Vilnius on the third day of Operation Barbarossa. From here he was able to strike and close the Minsk pocket from the northeast, thus contributing heavily towards the German victory in the first major encirclement battle on the Eastern front. For this action he would receive the Oakleaves to his Knight's Cross.
