The following wartime excerpt describes why Kopp received the Knight’s Cross…

“Feldwebel Karl Kopp… received the Knight’s Cross on the 15.11.1941 while serving as a Zugführer in an Infanterie-Regiment. On the 16.09.1941 he captured three bridges (all of which had been prepped for demolition) in a coup-de-main. Because of this success it was possible for his Division to close the encirclement ring east of Kiev in conjunction with the Panzer-Division coming from the southeast.”
