Kenneth R. Berquist, 37552925, Technical Sergeant, Company A, 331st Infantry, United States Army. For distinguishing himself by gallantry in action near St. Lunaire, France, on 14 August 1944. When an enemy mortar position halted the advance of his company, Technical Sergeant Berquist, with complete disregard for his own safety, proceeded alone through open terrain to attack the enemy position. Despite being wounded by sniper fire he heroically continued his mission until he was close enough to knock the mortar and its crew out of action with hand grenades. Only after the company objective had been reached and after he had evacuated all of his wounded men did he admit the seriousness of his own wounds and submit to evacuation. Technical Sergeant Berquist’s inspiring leadership and great personal courage reflect the highest credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the military service of the United States. Entered military service from Minnesota.
