For heroic achievement while serving as a Casualty Clerk of Headquarters Company, First Battalion, Twenty-eighth Marines, Fifth Marine Division, during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Vulcano Islands, from 28 February to 26 March 1945. When his battalion was suffering heavy casualties, Private Dohler voluntarily made his way through difficult sniper-infested ravines to the front lines to secure vital reports. On each occasion, he and a companion reached the Company Command Post despite intense mortar and sniper fire and, relaying messages from Battalion Headquarters, gathered required information personally from each company and delivered accurate reports to adjacent unit commanders as he progressed from one command post to another. As he moved among the assault platoons, Private Dohler furnished information concerning the welfare of previously wounded Marines to their comrades, thereby materially aiding in the maintenance of high moral among combat troops. His devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
Private Dohler is authorized to wear the Combat "V".

With "V" combat device.
