Citation:
"In attacking enemy positions near Cape d' Orlando, Sicily, 10 August, 1943, private HAGENS Company encountered a heavily mined area in an orchard, in which 20 men were killed or wounded. Knowing the orchard to be heavily mined, he rushed forward through heavy enemy machine gun fire and rifle fire to render first aid to the wounded. Private HAGEN evacuated 13 men wounded by mines. Later at 1030 hours, he crossed the river bed in front of positions to which the Company had withdrawn, during an intense artillary barrage to give aid to the wounded. Over a two hour period while enemy shelling continued, he crossed and recrossed the the impact area to render aid and evacuate the seriously wounded. His gallant sets, performed with complete disregard for personal safety, were an inspiration to all who witnessed the action and resulted directly in saving the lives of a number of wounded. Private HAGENS conduct is in keeping with the highest tradation of the Medical Corps and reflects credits upon himself and the military service."
