Biography

Charles "Chuck" Gander was born on March 19th, 1918. He grew up at a wheat farm in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. After he graduated from the Washington High School in Fergus Falls, he left his parents farm and found a job in St. Paul, Minnesota. Here he met Jean Williamson with whome he married on December 14th, 1941. The couple lived in California until Chuck was enlisted in the army. The would finally have six children.

After the Second World War he returned to Hudson, where he worked for the State of Wisconsin Petroleum Inspection office and was later promoted to District Supervisor with responsibility for the laboratories in Hudson and Chippewa Falls. His wife died in 1983. After retiring in 1984, Chuck moved to Mesa, Arizona. Here he passed away on April 5th, 2010.

Citation:
"For gallantry in action against an armed enemy of the United States, 1 April 1945, Wommen, Germany. Sergeant Gander happened to observe a tank crewman that had been seriously wounded and with lack of prompt medical attention was in danger of losing his life. Without hesitation, or regard for personal safety he made his way to the wouded man and still under heavy concentrations of enemy fire managed to get the wounded man on his back and crawl on his hands and knees to a point of comparitive safety. Sergeant Gander's actions reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States."
