"This officer has participated in numerous sorties and has displayed a high standard of navigational ability throughout. On a recent occasion he took part in an attack on Wanne Eickel. Whilst leaving the target area the aircraft was hit by antiaircraft fire. Flying Officer Abell was wounded. He was given first aid and, although suffering acutely, he did everything he could to assist in navigating the aircraft home. He set a fine example of fortitude and devotion to duty."
