"Distinguished himself by courageous conduct against the enemy while performing his service on May 10, 1940, as a crew member aboard Our torpedo boat "Z 5," which, together with Our "Torpedo motorboat 51," had to hinder the passage of German troops from the southern bank to the northern bank of the Maas River via the Maas Bridge in Rotterdam. He performed his duties calmly and meticulously under heavy machine gun and light artillery fire, thereby contributing to the withdrawal of the boat, on which wounded and dead people were killed, without further damage after all the ammunition had been used up."
