Recommendation:
On the afternoon of 17 May 1944 during the attack by "A" Company, The Royal Canadian Regiment, on the heavily defended Point 59 (Map Reference 802133) in the Gustav Line, No. 4 Section of No. 8 Platoon was commanded by Private (Acting Lance-Corporal) Ronald Ernest Deadman. This Non-Commissioned Officer, showing complete disregard for his own personal safety, led his section deep into the enemy locality and engaged them on three sides. On noticing a 75 mm Self-Propelled gun about two hundred yards away, firing at another section of No. 8 Platoon, he sent back for the two inch mortar. He then stood up on the edge of a shell crater, which was held by No. 4 Section, and in full view of the enemy fired the mortar from the shoulder and silenced the Self-Propelled gun. By his action, Private (Acting Lance-Corporal) Deadman greatly facilitated the further advance of his company. Throughout the entire attack this Non-Commissioned Officer displayed a high order of courage and initiative and absolutely regard for his own personal safety.
