First Lieutenant Bernard F. Baugh, 01316873, Infantry, Headquarters Company, First Battalion Infantry, 331st Infantry, United States Army. For distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 6 August 1944, at St. Benoit-des-Ondes, France. When the advance of his unit was held up by a twelve man enemy patrol about to ignite TNT blocks on a mined bridge, Lieutenant Baugh, despite the intense covering enemy machine gun and mortar fire, fearlessly crossed the bridge and with the aid of a British officer engaged the enemy in a fire fight. His cool and accurate fire was responsible for killing eight of the enemy and causing the remainder to retreat. During the engagement the British Officer was wounded, and with complete disregard for his own safety Lieutenant Baugh went to a position forward of the wounded officer and covered him with rifle fire until he was able to crawl to safety. His while engaged in this gallant action Lieutenant Baugh was fatally wounded. His conspicuous courage and outstanding devotion to duty reflect the highest credit un himself and the finest traditions of the armed forces of the United States. Entered military service from Washington.
