"Throughout the action [at Dieppe, 19 August 1942], Corporal Duckworth of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry led his section with coolness and daring, displaying at all times the highest qualities of initiative and leadership.
Later in the day although exhausted by a long swim, he returned to the water and under heavy close range fire rescued a wounded and drowning man, carrying him to a place of safety.
Corporal Duckworth had been in the forefront of the fighting all day and his decision to sacrifice himself when the battle was obviously in its closing stages called for courage of the highest order.
