Dietrich von der Lanken is missing in action. His name has been inscripted at the German War cemetery at Krasnodar-Apscheronsk. At the moment of his missing, he was Führer Panzer-Regiment 24. He was posthumously promoted to Oberstleutnant.

“At the end of this past August Major von der Lancken and his Kampfgruppe broke through strongly fortified enemy positions southeast of Stalingrad. He and his men then advanced forwards to the western edge of the city, and thereby had a decisive share in the encirclement of the city from the south.”
