Awarded for his actions in January 1945 up until he sustained severe injuries sustained on the 24.01.1945. In the middle of that month, as the Kampfkommandant of the city of Schillen (located on the Insterburg-Tilsit railway line), he was able to hold out in the city with alarm and supply units for quite some time until receiving the order to breakout and reach friendly lines.

Four days later, he would once again distinguish himself in leading his Volkssturm and alarm units in their defense of the line Wehlau-Tapiau. In doing so he contributed significantly to maintaining the integrity of the German frontline between the Masurian Lakes and the Curonian Lagoon.
