On the 27.08.1942 the Soviets managed to penetrate the positions of the 2./Pionier-Bataillon 3 (mot), and in the process the Kompanie commander (Oberleutnant Benn) became a casualty. In response Oberfeldwebel Heinze took over the Kompanie, launched a counterattack with his weak I. Zug and managed to throw back the Soviets while reoccupying the positions that had been lost. He would receive the Knight’s Cross for this action.
