Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Hauptmann (Captain)
Unit:
Führer Pionier-Ersatz und Ausbildungs-Bataillon 213
Awarded on:
March 11th, 1945
Awarded for his contributions to the German defense of Festung Glogau in early 1945. On the 27.01.1945 he took over the northern bridgehead and, through his energy and organizational talent, he was able to transform his motley collection of alarm units into a battle ready force.

Later, on the 18.02.1945, he repeated the same feat when assigned to be commander of another important sector of the city’s defense in the southwest. He once again managed to increase the battle-readiness of the scratch forces deployed here, and personally led all the counterattacks launched at all levels from the squad to company level.

His accomplishments as both commander and organizer were especially noteworthy considering the variable fitness for battle of the soldiers he commanded, who ranged in age from 16 all the way to 60.
