Awarded for his actions during the Third Battle of Monte Cassino. During this time he was acting commander of the 1./Fallschirm-Panzer-Jäger-Abteilung 1, in position on the right flank of the 1. Fallschirmjäger-Division. During this battle his troops were not only able to destroy 20 Allied tanks up until the 17.05.1944, but also smash all the Allied infantry attacks against the southern entrance to Cassino.
