On the morning of April 23rd, 1943, a large allied armoured attack was launched east of Medjez. Through the actions of the 10. Panzer-Division, "Hermann Göring" Division and other German formations 81 tanks were destroyed. It was for actions on this day that Witte would receive the Knight's Cross. In a 90 second period he destroyed 9 allied tanks by himself as a Flak gunner from close range (as little as 50 yards).
