Biography

Gerardus Willem Schenk was born on August 31st, 1918 as son to Gerardus Cornelis Schenk and Liskje Schenk-Bruins. He was drafted in 1939 and based at the Soesterberg Airbase. Sometimes later his unit was transferred to Ypenburg. Wim served as mechanic with the 3 Ja.Va., 2e Luchtvaartregiment.. When the German parachutists attacked Ypenburg airbase on May 10th, 1940, Wim manned one of the machinegun posts near a hangar and was heavily wounded in the battle. He passed away on May 11th, 1940 in the Red Cross Hospital in the Hague.
