"Distinguished himself through courageous action against the enemy during the defence of casemate 61 at the lock at BORN on the Juliana Canal on 10 May 1940, by continuing to operate the heavy machine gun despite numerous direct hits from enemy artillery on the casemate, until he was seriously wounded by a hit in the embrasure; died from his injuries."
