During the breakthrough of the Maginot Line, on 14.06.1940, Major Löwrick led his battalion in a successful assault against the fortifications at Cappel. Despite being a strongly fortified bastion with plenty of supplies, Löwrick and his men nevertheless stormed the enemy positions in a well-executed action. Löwrick himself captured a bunker while fighting at the head of his men.
In the subsequent pursuit battles in Lorraine Löwrick and his battalion also played a key part in the crossing over the Rhine-Marne canal and the storming of the Meurthe bridges at Rosieres. For his victories throughout the campaign Löwrick would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross.
