"for meritorious service during the period 1 August 1944 to 31 December 1944 as attending surgeon to the ***. Major Gentry by his devotion to his professional duty, untiring zeal and energy, contributed substantially to the moral and health of the command. Following the bombing attack on the city of Liuchai, China, 27 November 1944, Major Gentry organized and personally directed the medical service rendered to hundreds of Chinese civilian and military casualties, working for 36 hours without regard for his own personal safety and health in the treatment of these casualties. Efforts of Japanese agents in Liuchai to cause Chinese civilians to resort to mob action against American troops in the city completely failed due to the medical service being rendered to Chinese casualties by Major Gentry and his associates."
