The following wartime excerpt describes why Löffler received the Knight’s Cross…

“… He took over command of his Grenadiers after the previous Zugführer had fallen in battle. With these men he then proceeded to repulse non-stop attacks by numerically superior Soviet forces (which were also supported by tanks) over the course of 2 days of bitter fighting. Despite being wounded himself he remained with his unit until the defensive success here was completed.”
