The following press excerpt describes why Löffler would be awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“During the fighting southwest of Vyazma a friendly counterattack threatened to stall under heavy enemy fire. In response he [Löffler] crawled forwards at the head of his Zug of Württemberg riflemen, with machine-pistol and grenades in hand. He was the first to penetrate into the Soviet trenches and thereafter proceeded to roll them up. During a subsequent Bolshevik attack with tank support Oberfeldwebel Löffler was the one to strike this force in the flank and separate the enemy tanks from their supporting infantry. The result was that 8 Soviet tanks were eventually destroyed. A short time after this the brave Oberfeldwebel fell in battle during the continued fighting on the Eastern front.”

Awarded posthumously.
