During the defensive battles north of Orel in late 1942, Obergefreiter Stellmann distinguished himself by personally destroying 19 enemy tanks with his 88 mm gun despite being under the heaviest of enemy fire himself. In doing so he proved to be of decisive support to the defending German infantry, and as a result of his success the enemy intention to encircle German forces and capture an airfield was thwarted.
