"For meritorious achievement while serving with United States Marine Corps forces in action against enemy Japanese forces from January 4, 1943 to August 1, 1944. First Sergeant Hester participated in major campaigns of the fighting forces in the British Solomon Islands, Gilbert Islands and Mariana Islands. He performed his duties during these campaigns in an outstanding manner, exhibiting coolness and calmness under enemy fire at all times. His loyalty, courage and devotion to were importane factors in the success of the unit to which he was assigned. He served his country skillfully and honorably throughout these campaigns and his conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
