R.B. Lewellen sprong boven Normandië op D-Day 6 juni 1944 in de buurt van Gourbesville. Hij belandde midden in een vuurgevecht en raakte gewond aan zijn hand. Later werd hij krijgsgevangwen gemaakt en naar een Duitse verbandpost gebracht waar een dokter hem dwong zijn hand te laten amputeren omdat die ernstig verminkt was.
