Biography

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Hasler lost his father in 1917 when the troopship Transylvania was torpedoed. He later attended Wellington College and was commissioned into the Royal Marines in 1932. During World War II, he served in the Norwegian campaign, earning the OBE and French Croix de Guerre.

In 1942, Hasler led 10 Royal Marines in a covert canoe raid on German ships in Bordeaux, with only he and Marine Bill Sparks surviving to escape overland to Spain.

Leaving the military in 1948 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Hasler became a pioneering yachtsman, inventing the first practical self-steering gear for yachts. In 1960, he competed in the Observer Single-Handed Transatlantic Race (OSTAR), transforming solo sailing.

Hasler passed away in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1987
